Future-Proofing is Great. Until the Future Doesn't Cooperate.

Spend enough time in strategy sessions and it comes up sooner or later:We need to future-proof this.
It’s well-intentioned. Smart, even. After all, who wants to build something that’s obsolete before the paint dries?
But here’s the uncomfortable part nobody likes to talk about: A company can "future-proof" all it wants — and the future will still do whatever it damn well pleases.
Markets shift. Tastes evolve. Technologies zig when everyone planned for a zag. Whole categories that seemed stable start behaving like teenagers on a sugar rush.
And it’s not because the teams didn’t think hard enough. It’s because the future doesn’t sign the product roadmap. It doesn’t attend the strategy offsite. It doesn’t care about the well-reasoned three-year plan.
It just happens. Often sideways. Sometimes upside-down.
